Half of the 45,000 square-feet of space will be devoted to dining and live entertainment and the other half devoted to games and feature attractions.
Cineplex announced Tuesday that it will open a 45,000 square-foot entertainment complex in the old Empire 7 cinema on Granville Street in 2021.
Construction on The Rec Room Granville, which will include a live performance venue, arcade, dining options and a rooftop patio, is scheduled to begin next year.
“It’s 45,000 feet of fun,” said Cineplex spokeswoman Tiana McPhee. “Cineplex entertains 70 million Canadians every year and The Rec Room is an amalgamation of everything we do best.”
Everything but show movies.
The Rec Room Granville, despite being owned by Cineplex and located in a former movie multiplex, will not contain a movie theatre and will not threaten the existence of Cineplex’s nine-screen Scotiabank Theatre, located nearby at 900 Burrard Street.
Approximately half of the space will be devoted to dining and live entertainment and the other half devoted to more than 100 amusement games and feature attractions.
The mammoth block at 855 Granville Street, in the centre of the city’s entertainment district, has sat empty since 2012, when Empire 7 closed for good.
In a press release, Cineplex says the facility will contain an upscale casual restaurant called Three10, a quick-serve dining area called The Shed, and several bars throughout the space “where sports fans and cocktail lovers alike can grab a drink.”
The live performance space will feature musical acts along with comedy shows, trivia nights, karaoke and live DJs
“We’ve hosted everything from roller derbies to boxing match weigh-ins to Ted Talk X events,” said McPhee.
Cineplex operates seven other Rec Room locations in south Edmonton, West Edmonton Mall, Calgary, Toronto, London, Ont., Mississauga and St. John’s (NFLD), with three more locations coming soon including one in Burnaby’s Brentwood Mall, expected to open later this year.
